Volunteering and trekking create a perfect blend of service and adventure, a combination beautifully offered by Trekking Mate. This unique opportunity allows participants to serve those in need while soaking in the breathtaking beauty of Nepal. Reflecting on my journey, I can confidently say that this experience has profoundly shaped who I am today.
My name is Jan and my career in the tourism industry began after completing high school, at a government school in 2014. I started as a trainee host, working alongside Australian students. During that time, we were engaged in a volunteering project to help a local school construct a protective wall, which was essential for its security. The project extended beyond physical work- we played soccer with the children, taught them English, learned to cook Nepali cuisine, and experienced heartwarming welcomes and farewells from the local community. This project not only opened doors for me to lead future tours and treks but also left an indelible mark on my values and outlook on life.

As I pursued my undergraduate studies, I simultaneously took on leadership roles in various projects, tours, and treks. Volunteering instilled in me invaluable life lessons: it made me more ethical, taught me to understand others better, appreciate what I had, be generous to those in need, and respect diverse opinions and cultures. Each experience deepened my empathy and strengthened my sense of purpose.
Trekking, on the other hand, provided me with a contrasting yet equally enriching perspective. I have trekked to Everest, Manaslu, Mustang, Annapurna, and Mardi Himal, each journey offering a unique blend of challenge and healing. High-altitude trekking is not just about marveling at the natural beauty but also about resilience, self-care, and survival. While trekking tested my physical and mental endurance, it also provided solace during difficult times, allowing me to heal and grow stronger.
These two facets of my life- volunteering and trekking- have complemented each other beautifully. Volunteering taught me kindness, empathy, and compassion for vulnerable communities. Trekking, on the other hand, fostered a never-give-up attitude and the ability to push through challenges. Together, they have shaped me into a resilient, empathetic, and purpose-driven individual.
At high altitudes, you discover the strength to overcome adversity, while volunteering dives deep into your soul, urging you to find meaning and purpose. These experiences have given me the tools and perspective to navigate life’s challenges with grace and determination. Today, I feel fulfilled, strong, and ready to embrace whatever lies ahead. What more could one ask for in the journey of life?
